Rising Star Awards Evaluator
Rising Star Awards Evaluator
The Paper Mill Playhouse, the designated state theatre of New Jersey, is seeking several qualified Evaluators for their Rising Star Awards (RSA) program which awards excellence in the production of high school musical theatre. Positions are seasonal from January to June. We are particularly looking for evaluators living in the central and southern counties of the state; however candidates from northern counties are welcome to apply if they are willing to occasionally drive to central or southern counties to attend student productions.
Introduced in 1996, this nationally recognized program sends a panel of four Evaluators to review each of the 100 entered high school musical productions throughout all 21 counties in New Jersey. Evaluators submit nomination recommendations in 19 performance and production categories (i.e. Outstanding Performance by an Actor/Actress in a Leading Role, Outstanding Scenic Achievement, Outstanding Achievement by a Chorus, etc...). Nominations are announced in May and followed in June with a Tony AwardsÒ style ceremony at the Paper Mill Playhouse where nominees perform and recipients are announced and presented with an original crystal award provided by program sponsor, Tiffany & Company. Over $60,000 in scholarships are awarded during the ceremony. Past winners and nominees include two-time Tony nominee Laura Benanti (SOUND OF MUSIC, SWING, INTO THE WOODS, NINE, THE WEDDING SINGER), film actress Anne Hathaway (“The Princess Diaries”, “Brokeback Mountain”, “The Devil Wears Prada”), Matthew Scott (JERSEY BOYS Frankie Valli understudy), Jared Gertner (THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE), Veronica Kuehn (MAMMA MIA featured ensemble), Christine Danelson (HAIRSPRAY national tour as Tracy Turnblatt), Jelani Remy (DISNEY’S HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL national tour ) and many more performers currently appearing on Broadway, in national tours and in films & television.
Our current corps of 65 Evaluators is comprised of theatre educators as well as representatives from NJ professional and community theatres, presenting halls and arts education organizations. All Evaluators should hold a minimum of a BFA or BA degree in theatre, music, dance or a related area, and should ideally have experience in directing or mounting high school musicals. Interested persons without a degree, but with comparable work experience, may apply and will be considered on an individual basis. An ideal candidate would be an active or retired middle or high school musical theatre teacher/director whose school is not participating in the Rising Star program as an entrant. Candidates other than teachers should have extensive work experience in one of the arts disciplines on a professional basis, and have a strong sense of objectivity. They must be able to effectively evaluate student performances and production values. All candidates must be outstanding writers with the ability to effectively communicate their impressions in a constructive manner. Also, a candidate must already be an avid theatre-goer and should possess a wide knowledge of the canon of American Musical Theatre.
All newly hired Evaluators must be fluent in Microsoft Word and must have an email address to receive communications and submit performance reports as attachments. Only applicants with computer literacy and internet access will be considered. In addition, new Evaluators must attend an Orientation and Adjudication Training workshop in early January 2008. All candidates must be available and willing to commit to attending at least six high school musicals on the weekends during the course of the competition between January and April, including a minimum of three school productions during the busy month of March. Some Evaluator assignments may involve long distance driving and Paper Mill Playhouse will reimburse mileage and lodging expenses. Lastly, applicants should be available to attend the Final Evaluator Meeting in mid-May, 2008.
A stipend of $25 per adjudicated show is offered to Evaluators and all travel/lodging expenses are reimbursed. All participating schools provide complimentary tickets to their musicals for the RSA Evaluators, and tickets to the Annual Rising Star Awards ceremony on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 (not open for sale to the public) will also be provided.
Interested individuals should email a cover letter, resume and writing sample as a Microsoft Word attachment to Lisa E. Cooney, Director of Education, at LCooney@papermill.org. You may send mail to Paper Mill Playhouse, Brookside Drive, Millburn, NJ 07041, or fax to (973) 467-3778. Interviews will take place on a rolling basis.
